I am often asked why I started my coaching and advising business, but I am never quite satisfied with my answer. It is something I feel deeply yet sometimes have a hard time explaining. I think maybe the best way to illustrate it is to tell you a little about myself.
Even though I cringe writing this, I want you to know about the authentic “me.” Trust is earned, and working with a coach and advisor requires some vulnerability. I want to lead by example, so here goes.
Find a Good Fit: It’s About the Person, Not the Resume
Career accomplishments and experience are not the most important factors in choosing a coach or advisor to work with. The substance of someone’s experience should be table stakes for anyone you choose to work with, and I am happy to tell you about mine. You can also view my credentials on LinkedIn — you’ll see decades of financial and advisory leadership.
But the most important factor in finding a coach or advisor is whether they’re a good fit for you. The fit comes from who they are as a person. Someone can have an impressive resume, but if you don’t connect with them, the coaching/advising arrangement won’t work.
About Me
These are some of my defining qualities (which I hate talking about, by the way, but here we go):
Natural Leader
I’m the oldest child, a parent, and a business leader of 20+ years. Where others may feel burdened by responsibility I feel humbled and honored by it. While I’m not the friend you call when it is time for a night out, I am the friend you call for help.
Wired for Challenges
I prefer Type 2 fun. My ideal vacation is being active outside, somewhere in the mountains, rather than sitting on a beach all day doing nothing. I get bored and listless if I am not challenged by solving complex problems.
Always Learning
I love to read and listen to podcasts to learn new things. Recently, I enjoyed the book Hidden Potential by Adam Grant and the Hidden Brain and Ten Percent Happier podcasts. I also like to be entertained by a good movie or series.
Introverted
I prefer deep conversations over small talk. Walking into a room of people I don’t know makes me anxious. When I am conversing with someone, I would much rather listen than talk.
Balanced
I grew up playing football, baseball, and basketball, where I learned to be tough. However, I think it is critical to be in touch with our emotions. I value a strong work ethic but will not sacrifice my family or my personal well-being for my work.
Focused on Others
I know how good it feels to be seen, so I find it rewarding to make others feel seen. At this point in my life, I’d rather help others achieve their goals than receive accolades for my work.
Find a Good Fit
I know it’s hard to know if working with someone like me will be worth your time and money. Even if you know you want help, it’s hard to know who to trust. You should be aware up front that my approach prioritizes emotional intelligence and consistent, incremental growth.
Would I be a good fit for you? The only way to truly know is to reach out.
Now that you know a bit about me, let me tell you how I work with clients.
