Any of you who work out regularly know how hard it is to do that. Life is demanding. You get pulled in many directions and it is hard to take the time to get your workout in on a regular basis. Not to mention the fact that it can many times feel like you are subjecting yourself to torture. So why do we still do it? Because we know if we keep at it we will see meaningful positive results over time and that after workout feeling is pretty great. However, we also know that it is a never-ending process. As soon as we stop our consistent work the progress stops…in fact, we regress.
To become a great leader you have to have the same mindset as you do with your workouts. It is a continuous process of learning and challenging yourself that doesn’t end. And, it is going to be hard and exhausting. However, the progress you make along the way can be very rewarding.
In this blog, I will give you the framework to help you build your leadership muscle.
1. Setting Goals and Having a Plan
Just as we set goals for our physical training, as leaders we should have clear objectives and a plan for our professional development. Whether it’s improving communication skills, decision-making abilities, or team management, setting measurable goals and outlining the necessary steps to achieve them is the first crucial step in becoming a better leader.
2. Consistent Practice and Discipline
Workout enthusiasts understand the importance of consistent practice and discipline in achieving our desired results. Similarly, to be effective leaders we have to be committed to continuous learning, self-improvement, and honing our leadership skills through regular practice and discipline. This may involve attending workshops, seeking mentorship, reading relevant books, or taking on new challenges to stretch our capabilities.
3. Embracing Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles
When we work out, our fitness level improves when we push ourselves beyond our comfort zones and tackle progressively more challenging workouts. Likewise, as leaders we must embrace challenges and view obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning. By taking on new responsibilities, navigating through difficult situations, and learning from setbacks, we can develop resilience and adaptability—essential qualities for effective leadership.
4. Seeking Feedback and Adapting to Change
Just as we rely on coaches, trainers and our workout partners to challenge us and provide encouragement, as leaders we should actively seek input from colleagues, team members, mentors, and coaches to gain insights into our leadership effectiveness. If we are open to constructive criticism and actively seeking ways to improve, we can adapt our approach and make necessary adjustments to our leadership style, just as we change up our training routine to optimize results.
5. Rest and Recovery
Some of us are not great at this (I am looking in the mirror), but rest and recovery are essential for us to make lasting progress in our physical fitness. Similarly, as leaders we need to understand the importance of balancing hard work with periods of rest and rejuvenation. Taking time for relaxation and reflection allows us to recharge our mental and emotional energy, fostering a sustainable and resilient leadership approach. Take those vacation days!
If we approach leadership development with the same mindset that we do with our work out routine, we can cultivate the resilience, adaptability, and strength needed to become impactful leaders. The next time you are getting ready for that difficult conversation or that presentation you are nervous about, remember that embracing the discomfort and moving through it will make you stronger in the end.
One Small Step
This week take some time to focus on improving your skills as a leader. Have that conversation you have been putting off. Decide what one area of your leadership you want to develop. Ask for feedback. Or maybe the leadership work you do this week is taking a day off. Whatever it is, just do one thing.
If you want to talk about your leadership, or anything else I might help you with just reach out. What do you have to lose?
